RCOA releases submission and calls for expanded resettlement program

E-BULLETIN FOR MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS

As foreshadowed in last month’s bulletin, RCOA has now released its submission to the Australian Government on the 2009-10 Refugee and Humanitarian Program. The 139-page submission examines international refugee resettlement needs, the planning of Australia’s refugee program, visa processing and onshore protection issues, post-arrival settlement issues and the public promotion of Australia’s involvement in refugee support. RCOA released the submission on February 24, with a public statement calling for the Australian Government to expand the offshore refugee resettlement program over the coming five years from around 12,000 places (the offshore program’s annual average over the past six years) to 20,000 places. This statement received press and radio coverage, including a 12-minute interview with CEO Paul Power on ABC Radio National’s “Life Matters” program – http://www.abc.net.au/rn/lifematters/stories/2010/2828192.htm
